Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed officials to ensure use of treated sewage water for all non-potable purposes in government offices and public spaces and called for strict monitoring of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to preserve water quality and prevent wastage of drinking water.

At a review meeting on STP and treated water held at the MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad on Wednesday (October 28, 2026), the Chief Minister called for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in treatment plants and directed officials to appoint a special officer in each plant. He also asked them to connect all power plants to the command control center and ensure monitoring by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA).

Treated water for landscaping

Mr. Reddy said the treated water should be used for landscaping along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and other areas. The use of purified water should also be made mandatory for landscaping at the Secretariat and Chief Minister’s office, as well as in public parks.

Telling officials to issue orders to make the use of treated water mandatory for non-potable purposes in government offices, he said the Hyderabad Railways and Metro should also be included in the initiative. It should be ensured that treated water is used instead of fresh drinking water for all eligible purposes, he said. Treated water must be used in public parks and for street cleaning.

A toll-free number to facilitate supply

The Chief Minister wanted the treated water tankers to be monitored so that their movement and use could be tracked. He also called for a toll-free number to facilitate the supply of treated water and asked officials to carry out a wide publicity campaign to encourage its use.

He ordered officials to include conditions mandating the use of treated water at the stage of granting building permits. Private sewage treatment plants should be encouraged and the feasibility of operating solar-powered treatment plants should be explored, he said.

Deliver treated water to data centers

The Chief Minister also asked the officials to ensure supply of treated water to the data centers keeping in view their requirements and to take measures keeping in view the future demand.

Stressing that water quality should not be compromised under any circumstances, Mr. Reddy said the government must ensure that Hyderabad does not face drinking water shortage. He called for round-the-clock monitoring of drinking water supplies and warned officials against negligence.

The departments concerned have been directed to ensure that the measures announced in the meeting are implemented from November 1. HMWSSB officials said that currently, treated water from 26 STPs is supplied through green tankers, which provide a free resource. Only shipping charges are collected from consumers.
