Blasts reported at two places in Kannavam

The blasts were reported at two locations in Kannavam – near the Kannavam Range Forest Office and in Chunda – around 11.10pm on Sunday (October 25), prompting the police to launch an investigation with the help of forensic, detection and canine units.

Preliminary assessments indicate that crude bombs may have been used. Steel debris, believed to be from the explosions, was found near where the strong smell of explosives lingered. The motive remains unclear.

The Kannavam police registered a case under various sections of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908 and intensified efforts to identify those responsible.

An official at the Kannavam police station said both the explosives were detonated on roads, but the exact motive behind the incidents was yet to be established.

“In Chunda, houses were close to where the explosion took place, while along the road near the Kannavam Range Forest Office, houses were located a little further,” the official said.

The limited availability of CCTV cameras in the areas has made it difficult for investigators to get visual evidence, the official added.

Police along with forensic teams, bomb detection squads and dog squads checked both locations. Further investigations are underway to establish the circumstances of the explosion and determine a motive.
