Defeat for one race causes controversy! BCCI receives a complaint about the shooter’s error

A scoring error created a major controversy in the women’s under-19 cricket match between Jharkhand and Uttarakhand in Nagpur. The Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) claiming that an error by the official scorer cost the team the match and led to its exit from the tournament.Uttarakhand scored 134/6 when they batted first. Jharkhand were then bowled out for 133 as per the official scorecard and they were declared lost by one run. However, JCA claimed that the match should have ended in a draw as no run was added to Jharkhand’s total.

What went wrong during the match?

According to a report in The Indian Express, the controversy centers around an incident in the 30th over of Jharkhand’s innings. One of the Jharkhand batsmen was run out while trying to complete the second run on the fourth ball of the over. JCA claimed that the batsmen had already completed the first run, but the official scorer did not add it to the team’s total. The score on the ground was said to show the updated score. However, the extra run was not included in the official hitters’ records.

Jharkhand thought the match was a draw

The difference became crucial in the final moments of the match. Thinking they needed two runs from the last ball to win, Jharkhand managed to get a single. The players thought they had leveled the scores. However, they were shocked when the official result showed them losing by one run.According to the report, the Jharkhand team members had an argument with the official scorer and asked for a correction. However, the shooter did not change the decision.

Why did Jharkhand complain to BCCI?

A Jharkhand official told The Indian Express that the missing run proved costly as it changed both the outcome of the match and the team’s tournament campaign.“The scoreboard at the other end had the score updated after every ball, but the chief scorer forgot to add one run which cost us a draw. We asked the scorer to make the correction but he didn’t. As per the rule, the umpire has to go by the scorer and not the person giving the score on the scoreboard,” an official told the Jharkhand Indian Express. The JCA has now taken up the matter with the BCCI, claiming that the match ended in a draw but was recorded as a defeat by one run due to a scoring error.
