Delhi’s Longest Cycle Path Planned Along Yamuna: Route Details, Opening Date, Cost and Purpose | Today’s news
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) plans to build a 24-km cycle path along the banks of the Yamuna river, which could become the longest cycle path in the capital. The proposed route will run from the Old Railway Bridge near Wazirabad to National Highway 24 near Sarai Kale Khan, which will be part of a wider plan to improve public access to the waterfront.
The DDA has floated tenders for the first phase of the project with a total estimated construction cost of approx ₹16 crore, he told PTI quoting an official.
The project is part of the DDA’s broader vision under the approved Delhi 2047 Master Plans to strengthen the connection between the river and residents through green spaces, cycle routes, footpaths and recreational facilities.
Delhi Yamuna Cycle Path: Route Details
The proposed cycle path will stretch along the west bank of the Yamuna and connect areas from Old Railway Bridge near Wazirabad to National Highway 24 near Sarai Kale Khan.
The route is part of the larger 52 km Yamuna Corridor to be built in three phases. The first phase will cover the stretch from Old Railway Bridge at Wazirabad to National Highway 24.
A public green path with a width of 75 to 100 meters is planned along the river bank. It will include cycling and walking paths along with spaces for passive recreational activities.
The corridor is expected to connect several existing and proposed floodplain projects, including:
– Kalindi Biodiversity Park
The route is intended to improve access to parks and waterfront, while providing residents with dedicated space for cycling, walking and outdoor recreation.
When will the Yamuna cycle path open?
An official opening date has not yet been announced.
The DDA has issued a tender for the first phase, but the details provided do not include a construction completion date, a test run date or when the bike path will open to the public.
The project is planned in phases as part of the development of the larger Yamuna corridor. The opening date will depend on the tender process, construction progress and necessary approvals for works in the floodplain.
What is the purpose of the bike path?
The cycle path is part of the DDA’s proposed efforts to promote a stronger connection between people and the Yamuna, described in its planning vision as a “river-people connection”.
The project has several goals:
1. Improve public access to Yamuna
The Greenway is intended to make the river and nearby parks accessible to residents through dedicated walking and cycling routes.
2. Support cycling and outdoor recreation
The track will provide a dedicated route for cyclists, while footpaths and recreational areas will offer opportunities for outdoor activities.
3. Expand the green areas along the river
Extensive greenery is planned along the route. The wider greenway will include landscaped public spaces and connect existing and upcoming waterfront projects.
4. Link floodplain development
By connecting projects such as Baansera, Kalindi Biodiversity Park, Asita and Yamuna Vatika, the corridor aims to create a more connected network of public spaces along the river.
5. Support a larger vision for the Yamuna River in Delhi
The bike path is part of a wider plan to develop the waterfront with public and recreational facilities. The Delhi government had earlier announced plans for a Yamuna embankment inspired by Gujarat’s Sabarmati Embankment.
