At least five injured in rail car fire near Penn Station; NJ Transit and Amtrak rail delays | Today’s news

At least five people were injured after a fire broke out in a rail car near New York’s Penn Station, disrupting service for many commuters early Friday (local time), authorities said.

The incident delayed trains on New Jersey Transit and Amtrak rail service to New York and also briefly suspended service on the Long Island Rail Road, more than a week after a strike shut down the system, the AP reported.

Train services are delayed

In a post on X, New Jersey Transit posted that it was an Amtrak train that caught fire “in one of the Hudson River tunnels.” It said the fire had resulted in “damage to the overhead wire” and added: “Impacts are expected to last until the morning rush hour.”

He added: “Due to Amtrak catenary damage from an earlier Amtrak train car fire in one of the Hudson River tunnels, NJ TRANSIT rail service is suspended between Penn Station New York and Newark Penn Station. The Midtown Direct service is diverted to Hoboken.”

Amtrak posted on the X that it suspended service until at least noon Friday for maintenance stemming from a “now extinguished fire in the New York area.” Long delays were expected for trains traveling north of New York.

This is a developing story. Further details were awaited.
