The England captain reached the 200-run mark in just 114 deliveries, breaking India’s Shubman Gill’s record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Gill reached the milestone in 117 balls against West Indies in Guwahati last month, scoring an unbeaten 223 off 133 deliveries.

Brook’s innings, which featured 21 fours and 10 sixes, also eclipsed Ben Stokes’ 182 not out against New Zealand in 2023 to become the highest individual score by an England batsman in men’s ODIs.

Brook also joined Chris Gayle as the only other batsman to complete the trifecta: a triple hundred in Tests, a double hundred in ODIs and a hundred in T20Is.

The right-hander arrived at the crease at No.4 after Ben Duckett was dismissed, England down two wickets. He took time to settle in at first, reaching 13 off 24 balls before shifting dramatically. Brook struck for 189 and runs off his next 92 deliveries, combining power hitting with inventive stroke play to unravel the Sri Lankan attack.

He brought up his century from 75 balls before accelerating further in the closing stages. Brook reached 150 in 97 deliveries and completed his double century with a slanting boundary off Janith Liyanage in the final over. He was dismissed off the last ball of the innings, caught at short third, but not before taking England to an impressive 429 for four in their 50 overs.

Brook received valuable support from Joe Root, who scored 69 off 65 balls to become the first England batsman to surpass 8,000 ODI runs. Opener Tom Banton contributed 50 while Will Jacks provided the late collapse with 66 off just 24 deliveries as England plundered 296 runs in the last 25 overs.

England’s total was the highest in an ODI played in Pakistan, putting Sri Lanka under immense pressure in their chase of 430. Brook’s landmark innings also enhanced his record as captain: all four of his ODI centuries have come since he took over the leadership role.
