India’s Anjanaben Bumbadiya produced a golden performance in the women’s 400m T47 at the Asian Para Games to lead compatriot Jayanti Behera to a 1-2 finish for the country in Nagoya on Thursday. Visually impaired runner Tejalben Damor added to India’s silver medal in the women’s 400m T12.
Bumbadiya claimed gold in 59.97 seconds, becoming the only runner in the four-athlete field to finish under the one-minute mark. Behera took home silver in 1:00.65 while Thailand’s Sasirawan Inthachot completed the podium in 1:02.58.
Asian Para Games 2026, October 22: Update
For Bumbadiya, the triumph had added significance as she celebrated a significant result in only her second international competition. The Indian was delighted to parlay her efforts into a gold medal on the continental stage.
“This is only my second international competition and winning the gold gives me immense happiness. All I wanted was to give my best and I am happy that I could do that at this event,” said Bumbadiya after the race.
India’s one-two finish provided another highlight for the country’s athletics contingent, Behery’s silver to complement Bumbadiya’s gold in the T47 category. The classification includes athletes with upper limb deficiency or impairment of one arm, including those with below elbow or wrist amputations.
Tejalben adds another medal
Damor continued her impressive campaign to secure silver in the women’s 400m T12, finishing on the podium in 57.60 seconds.
The result marked her second medal of the Games, after a bronze in the women’s 200m T12 event. Her latest podium finish added another significant result for India’s visually impaired athletes at the continental event.
With Bumbadiya and Behera taking the top two positions in the women’s 400m T47 race and Damor adding silver in the T12 race, India enjoyed another productive run on the track.
Bumbadiya’s breakthrough win was particularly notable given her limited international experience. Her sub-one-minute effort clinched the title, while Behera’s strong ride secured India both gold and silver.
The results further boosted India’s medal tally in athletics as the country’s para-athletes continued their campaign in Nagoya.
