Election Commission announces revision of voter list in 17 states, UT amid SIR range | Today’s news

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday announced a special summary revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, including those slated for assembly elections next year, PTI reported.

The move comes amid raging debate and protests in India over the Special Intensive Review (SIR) across the country.

In a letter to Chief Electoral Officers of States and Union Territories, the EC said that January 1, 2027 will be the qualifying date for the exercise.

The states include Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa, where parliamentary elections are due next year.

The aim of the revision is to register eligible voters, especially young and first-time voters, correct errors in existing entries in the electoral roll and improve the accuracy of the electoral rolls.
