IND vs WI: Daren Sammy snacks on guavas with Hyderabad Cricket Board
Guavas were intended for players. But during the innings break of the fourth T20I against India, it was West Indies head coach Daren Sammy who seemed to get the most out of them.
With a plate full of fruit in hand, Sammy looked completely at ease as he walked around giving instructions to his batsmen and had a word in Rovman Powell’s ear. Before long, he was walking off alongside 12th man Kamil Pooran, the two chatting and munching on guavas.
IND vs WI 4th T20I: Update | Scorecard
It was a fun little moment in a break that otherwise belonged to the West Indies batting. They had just blasted their way to a massive 247 for three, putting India under considerable pressure before the chase.
Sammy had every reason to relax. Its captain, Shai Hope, led from the front with a sensational unbeaten 102 off just 50 balls. Hope smashed nine sixes and four fours, making a mockery of the Indian bowling attack as he powered the visitors to a formidable total.
Sherfane Rutherford provided the perfect finish and remained unbeaten on 49 off 26 deliveries. He hit four fours and three sixes to collect after Mayank Yadav dropped him for 42.
A late strike from the pair ensured West Indies finished with a flourish, leaving India with a mountain to climb.
Prince Yadav was India’s best bowler of the night, returning figures of 1 for 36 from his four overs. The rest of the attack struggled to contain the Caribbean batsmen, with Hope and Rutherford dictating the conditions.
Amidst all the big shots and mounting pressure on India, Sammy’s guava moment offered a lighter scene. The fruit appeared to be part of the team’s effort to re-energize during the break, but the head coach happily chipped in even as he continued to discuss the game with his players.
With 247 runs on the board, Sammy could afford to enjoy a snack. Meanwhile, his batsmen were given a brief respite before the real work on the field began.
