Flawless Iga Swiatek outclassed Serena Williams with a dominant victory at the Wuhan Open

Iga Swiatek produced a commanding performance to beat Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-1 to reach the last 16 of the Wuhan Open 2026 on Wednesday. The Polish star also claimed her 40th win of the season, extending her remarkable consistency on the WTA Tour.

With the win, Swiatek moved past tennis legend Serena Williams on the list of women with the most WTA 1000 main draw wins since the format’s inception in 2009. With 149 wins, Swiatek climbed to seventh on the all-time list, moving ahead of Williams, who finished her career with 148 wins in the category.

The result also extended Swiatek’s impressive record of consistency. She has now recorded at least 40 wins in five consecutive seasons, underscoring her ability to remain among the top players in women’s tennis.

Working to maintain consistency in her game, Swiatek was pleased with how she handled the challenge Frech presented.

“We know each other pretty well. I just wanted to focus on being consistent and playing my best. He runs to every ball and sometimes uses the opponent’s strength against them. I wanted to avoid being too aggressive and stay solid instead. I’m glad I did that,” Swiatek said after the win.

HOW SWIATEK CRUSHED FRECH

Swiatek had to recover from an early break in the opening set, but quickly found her rhythm and began dictating play from the baseline. Her powerful hitting and consistency put Frech under sustained pressure, allowing the seventh seed to turn the match around to take the first set 6-2.

The second set proved to be even more straightforward as Swiatek continued to control the rally and denied Frech any opportunity to come back. She finished the match 6-1 to secure a place in the round of 16.

The win marked a strong start to Swiatek’s campaign in Wuhan, where she will look to build momentum as the tournament progresses.

Swiatek will next face the winner of the second round match between Ashlyn Krueger and Lanlana Tararudee in the round of 16.
