The rupee gained 44 paise to 94.92 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday (Oct 14, 2026), supported by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) interventions aimed at easing short-term dollar demand and curbing speculative foreign exchange exposures.
Forex traders said the USD/INR pair, which has gained nearly 2% in the last three trading sessions, opened on a positive note on Wednesday (Oct 14), largely on the back of regulatory measures implemented by the RBI to curb volatility and curb speculative trading.
A sustained move below the 95.00 threshold opens up potential towards 94.50, but continued external macroeconomic pressures are likely to moderate further gains, they said.
In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.05, then rallied to touch 94.92, registering a gain of 44 paise from its previous close.
On Tuesday (Oct 13, 2026), the rupee strengthened for the third session in a row, gaining 42 paise to close at 95.36 against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday (13 October) that the rupee has weakened “significantly” over the past year and a half and that the RBI will continue its efforts to prevent excessive volatility in the domestic currency.
The Reserve Bank announced a series of measures over the weekend to stem the rupee’s slide. The central bank announced the creation of a special window for oil marketing companies to take away dollar demand from the spot market and tightened rules governing forex derivatives trades to curb speculative bets against the rupee. It also asked banks to keep a 20% reserve on dollar purchases of more than $2 million.
Ms. Sitharaman said most of the rupee’s volatility stems from external issues while the government ensures that the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain sound.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, traded 0.06% lower at 102.11. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, traded 0.57% higher at $106.29 a barrel in futures.
In the domestic stock market, the Sensex sank 32.96 points to 73,000.82 in early trade, while the Nifty fell 32.65 points to 22,688.75.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) unloaded stocks worth a net worth of ₹ 1,305.13 crore on Tuesday (October 13), according to stock exchange data.
