CJP’s lawyer says Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde were ‘arrested’, calls it ‘illegal’ | What we know so far | Today’s news
Delhi Police arrested Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) activists Saurav Das, Ashutosh Rank and Ajinkya Shinde for allegedly breaking into Jantar Mantar. According to Delhi Police sources, the CJP activists are under preventive arrest.
Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde were detained and a case was registered by the Delhi Police while trying to enter the Jantar Mantar, a day after the authorities had designated the site as a designated place of protest.
Earlier that day, Ranka, Das and Shinde tried to break the cordon and enter Jantar Mantar. In a video shared by Abhijeet Dipek, CJP protesters, including Ranka and Das, are seen climbing over a locked gate to enter Jantar Mantar.
The protesters also raised slogans like “Gyanesh Kumar isteefa do (Gyanesh Kumar, resign)” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” while holding the national flag.
They were taken to Jaffarpur Kalan police station.
“Not allowed to meet their lawyers”
Legal chief CJP Ratna Singh said they will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
“Delhi Police arrests Saurav Das, Ashutosh Rank and Ajinkya Shinde at Parliament Street Police Station in Jantar Mantar case today,” Singh wrote on X.
Explaining the charges on which they were arrested, Singh mentioned: “Trespassing, breach of custody, obstructing the duty of a public officer, etc.”
Ahead of the October 10 protest, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were detained and later released from custody on the order of a special court on the condition that they “do not disturb the peace for one year”. “Guarantee”. ₹50,000 wa was also signed.
She further informed in a late night post that the CJP activists will be produced before the SCM court in the morning.
“The possibility of judicial custody (JC) in Tihar Jail is possible. They were not allowed to meet their lawyers until late at night. They were brought to Parliament Street PS at 3 AM in a private van. Despite these illegal actions, their spirits are up,” Ratna Singh wrote on X.
In an early morning update, Singh said: “Update at 5:38 – Just informed that Saurav, Ashutosh and Ajinkya are likely to be produced before the SEM (Special Executive Magistrate) at Mandir Marg police station within an hour. FYI, the 24-hour deadline will end soon,” Singh wrote in another post.
“People went to Jantar Mantar, simply to pick up Tiranga”
Ratna Singh had earlier accused the Delhi Police of acting arbitrarily and following the orders of higher authorities in dealing with the activists.
Singh alleged that the CJP activists were denied access to lawyers for almost 24 hours and were initially not informed of the reasons for their detention.
“Currently, we are witnessing Delhi Police operating under a specific ‘rulebook’ which is dictated by orders from above. They have suspended the law to follow this regulation. We have seen how people who went to Jantar Mantar were detained simply to raise Tiranga,” she said, according to ANI.
Singh further alleged that police personnel denied access to lawyers and volunteers despite repeated attempts to meet the detained party members.
“Almost 24 hours have passed, yet they have not been allowed to meet any lawyers, nor have they been initially informed of the reasons for their detention or arrest,” she added.
“They denied access not only to the regular volunteers but also to the lawyers who had been present since morning. The SHOs and other officers on the ground still insisted that they were acting on orders from above. So who is giving these orders to the Delhi Police, orders that override the law itself?” she asked.
Singh accused the authorities of cracking down on peaceful protests, claiming that designated protest sites were de-registered and people visiting public spaces were detained and detained for prolonged periods.
She also questioned the police response to other incidents in the state capital, claiming that while criminals roamed freely, peaceful protesters were stopped from demonstrating.
Singh said: “We see criminals roaming freely, roaming around the city, attacking people, yet peaceful protesters are being stopped. Designated protest sites are being ‘de-notified’ and people visiting these public spaces are being detained without explanation and detained for long periods.”
“Delhi police is being used as a puppet and is dealing very harshly with peaceful protesters, which is not right,” she said.
“The recent arrests are illegal”
Calling the recent arrests illegal, Singh argued that the alleged crimes against the activists had not occurred and accused the authorities of using the detentions as a means of discouraging the protests.
Singh claimed: “The recent arrests are illegal; no information has been provided and none of the alleged crimes in the charges actually happened.”
“I believe it’s just a tactic to frame people, a way to intimidate them into not protesting. But they’re wrong; they can’t stop protesters by invoking such sections or detaining them in this way,” she added.
This comes amid the CJP and the opposition’s ongoing agitation against CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
