‘Agreed to build on positive momentum’: PM Modi talks to Canadian Carney ahead of FM Anita Anand’s visit to India | Today’s news

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone call with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on Tuesday, during which the two leaders agreed on the positive momentum of India-Canada ties and the need to work towards concrete results in key areas such as trade and energy.

The conversation comes ahead of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to India, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

“We had a warm and productive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada relations and work towards concrete results in key areas of our strategic partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people relations,” PM Modi said via a post on X.

“Together, India and Canada are contributing to a more stable and prosperous world,” he added in the same post.

The conversation took place shortly after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held talks with Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu to discuss progress on India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Goyal shared highlights from the engagement at X: “He discussed the progress of India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations with a focus on a balanced, mutually beneficial agreement that improves market access and unlocks new trade and investment opportunities. He believes that CEPA will provide new impetus for bilateral trade and strengthen our economic partnership for shared prosperity.”

Sidhu leads the largest Canadian corporate delegation to visit India in three decades, with around 300 delegates to explore joint ventures across key sectors as the two countries move forward with CEPA negotiations.

In a post on X, Sidhu said the delegation will focus on key sectors such as aerospace, clean energy, technology, life sciences, agri-food and forestry as Canada seeks to expand trade relations with one of the world’s fastest-growing major markets.

“We are also moving forward with negotiations on the CEPA trade agreement between Canada and India to open up more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses,” he said.

Sidhu added that Canada has also made progress on CEPA negotiations to ensure greater market access and strengthen bilateral economic ties with New Delhi.

India and Canada are working on an agreement aimed at opening up more opportunities for businesses and workers.
