Cristiano Ronaldo’s Golden UAE Visa: How He Qualified With No Assets And Still Residency Despite Living And Playing For Saudi Al-Nassr

Soccer Football – Saudi Pro League – Al Riyadh vs Al Nassr – Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – August 21, 2026 Al Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo reacts REUTERS/Hamad I Mohammed Cristiano Ronaldo is closing in on the 1,000-goal milestone with just 19 goals to go, while continuing to lead the line for Riyadh’s Al-Nassr following his high-profile arrival in Saudi Arabia in 2023. He has since helped the club compete for major honours, while his contract extension for the upcoming season in Saudi Arabia has seen him extend his contract until 2027.But while Ronaldo’s achievements in Saudi Arabia are well documented, his connection with the neighboring UAE goes back much further. In February 2020, almost three years before joining Al-Nassr, he received a UAE Golden Visa in recognition of his sporting stature under a program introduced in 2019 to attract exceptional international talent. What makes his case particularly interesting is that his accolades were linked to his achievements as an athlete, rather than more familiar paths involving real estate investment or business ownership. So how did Ronaldo qualify for one of the most sought-after residency options in the UAE without playing for a club in the Emirates, and can he keep it while living and working in Saudi Arabia?

Ronaldo received a Golden Visa while playing for Juventus

When Cristiano Ronaldo received his golden UAE visa in February 2020, he was a 35-year-old Juventus striker living in Italy, with no immediate plans to move his football career to the Middle East. His recognition came as the UAE expanded its long-term residency program to attract talent beyond the investors, entrepreneurs and business professionals who have traditionally been its main beneficiaries. As part of the expanded system, high-profile international athletes could also be considered for long-term residency, giving the country a new way to attract big names from the world of sport.

Ronaldo was among the first group of sporting figures to be recognized in this expanded category, alongside tennis champion Novak Djokovic and footballers Luís Figo, Roberto Carlos, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Miralem Pjanic. The idea was to bring internationally renowned athletes closer to the Emirates and encourage them to maintain ties with the country through regular visits, business opportunities and other professional connections.Ronaldo was naturally fit. He became a regular visitor to Dubai and just weeks before receiving his visa won the Men’s Player of the Year award at the Globe Soccer Awards for a record sixth time on 29 December 2019. His achievements on the pitch have given the UAE a high-profile sporting figure, while his existing affinity for Dubai has made the link even more fitting.

What does the UAE Golden Visa offer and who qualifies

The UAE launched its Golden Residency program in 2019 following an initiative announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Unlike regular residence permits tied to employers or local sponsors, the program offers eligible foreign nationals long-term residency that allows them to live, work, study and invest in the Emirates with greater independence.Under the current framework, eligible applicants can obtain renewable residency for five or 10 years depending on their category and applicable conditions. Key benefits include:

  • Long-term stability: Holders obtain renewable residency without needing an employer or other local sponsor to maintain their status.
  • Family sponsorship: Eligible residents can sponsor their spouses, children regardless of age and parents, along with domestic workers as per applicable regulations.
  • Greater travel flexibility: Golden Visa holders can stay outside the UAE for longer than the usual six-month absence limit without automatically losing their residency.
  • Job and investment opportunities: Holders can live, work, study and invest in the UAE while benefiting from the extended stay agreement.
  • Support for foreign applicants: Eligible out-of-country applicants can obtain a six-month multiple-entry visa that can be extended for an additional six months to complete their residency procedures.

Since its launch in 2019, the UAE Golden Visa program has expanded to cover a much wider range of people, from public investment and real estate investors to entrepreneurs, scientists, qualified professionals, outstanding students and graduates, humanitarian pioneers and exceptional talents such as athletes and figures in culture and the arts. Each category has its own eligibility criteria and application or nomination process depending on the background of the applicant. In other words, there is no single path to securing a Golden Visa; the requirements depend on the category in which one qualifies.

Why Ronaldo qualified without buying a property in Dubai

As noted above, Ronaldo did not need to purchase property in Dubai or make a qualifying financial investment to obtain the Golden Visa. His journey was based on his status as an elite international athlete following the expansion of the program by the UAE Cabinet in early February 2020 to include prominent sports figures. With five Ballon d’Or awards to his name at the time, a record of success at clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus and an established international career with Portugal, Ronaldo had the sporting credentials to qualify for the newly expanded category. He later invested in Dubai real estate and reportedly bought a luxury beachfront property on Jumeirah Bay Island in 2024 for an estimated €25-30 million, but that came years after he was granted a Golden Visa. The move also reflects how the UAE’s approach to attracting talent has evolved over the years. Introduced in 2019, the Golden Visa has since become part of the country’s wider ambitions within We vision UAE 2031launched in November 2022. By opening its doors to athletes, scientists and other exceptional talent, the UAE is looking beyond investors and entrepreneurs, recognizing that people with global influence can also help raise their profile and support their ambitions beyond oil.The benefit for Ronaldo was that he didn’t need to move his playing career to Dubai or join a UAE football club to qualify. The Golden Visa is a residence arrangement, not a work contract, and eligible holders can spend extended periods outside the country without automatically losing their status under the usual six-month absence rule. This flexibility helps explain how a footballer based in Italy at the time could obtain residency in the United Arab Emirates and later move to Saudi Arabia without the two arrangements necessarily conflicting. For the UAE, an athlete of Ronaldo’s stature offered a way to attract global talent and put its Golden Visa program on the international map. With his global following and immense commercial appeal, he was the natural face of a scheme designed to look beyond business and investment.

Ronaldo’s connection with Dubai goes far beyond football

Ronaldo’s relationship with Dubai was well established long before he received his Golden Visa in 2020. The city has become a regular destination for family holidays, yacht trips and sporting events, while his CR7 brand, wider commercial interests and property investments in the Emirates have given him even more reasons to keep coming back. With its luxurious lifestyle and international business scene, Dubai was a natural fit for the soccer star.He also developed a friendly relationship with some of the city’s most famous figures, including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. The two have been spotted together on several occasions, from training at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex to meeting at Dubai’s Aura Skypool in January 2022. Ronaldo once shared a photo of them on Instagram with the caption: “Always great to see you my friend @faz3.”His love for the city has never been much of a secret either. At a fan event during Expo 2020 Dubai in January 2022, Ronaldo told the crowd: “I love Dubai. Because they treat me incredible. I love the people. I love the culture. And I go every year, so it’s nice to be here.”Between family stays, business ventures and property investments, Dubai has become much more than just a holiday stop for Ronaldo. His long association with the city also helps explain why the UAE has recognized him with a golden visa.

How can Ronaldo live in Riyadh and maintain residency in the United Arab Emirates

Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia began with an agreement to join Al-Nassr on 30 December 2022, followed by his arrival in Riyadh and official unveiling on 3 January 2023. He and his entourage initially stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Riyadh in the Kingdom Centre, with reports at the time including the cost of living at around $0,030 and a monthly suite. a two-story Kingdom Suite covering approximately 4,000 square feet. The family subsequently moved to an exclusive residential complex in Riyadh, which remains their main base while Ronaldo plays for Al-Nassr. In June 2025, he extended his contract with the Saudi Arabian club until 2027 and on 11 August 2026, after their relationship began in 2016, he married Rodríguez in a private civil ceremony in Portugal.

Ronaldo was seen kissing the Saudi emblem on his shirt and celebrating with a Saudi flag scarf after Al-Nassr won the AFC Champions League Elite 3-1 over Neftchi Fergana.

Ronaldo’s stay in Saudi Arabia falls under the Gifted Residency category of the Saudi Premium Residency program, which, like the UAE’s Golden Visa, aims to attract exceptional international talent as part of the kingdom’s wider economic diversification plans. Unlike the standard club-bound athlete work visa, it allows eligible holders to live in Saudi Arabia without an employer sponsor, sponsor family members and own property under program rules. This means that Ronaldo can continue to live in the kingdom even if he stops playing for Al-Nassr. The residency is renewable every five years, subject to program requirements, giving him a longer-term option to stay in Saudi Arabia. When he extended his contract with Al-Nassr in 2025, Ronaldo also spoke of his desire to stay in the Kingdom for the long term. He further strengthened his ties to the country through luxury property investments, including a private island villa in Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton reserve on the Red Sea coast. For someone based in Riyadh, Dubai is also an accessible destination, with direct flights usually taking around two hours. Ronaldo can maintain his links with Dubai through visits during breaks from club duties without having to make the Emirates his home base.More importantly, holding residency in one country does not automatically prevent someone from holding long-term residency in another country. The UAE Gold Visa and Saudi Premium Residency are separate programs and there is no general rule requiring holders to choose between them. For Ronaldo, this means that his residency in the UAE can remain a separate connection to the Emirates while he lives and plays in Saudi Arabia, provided he continues to meet the relevant requirements for both. More than six years after receiving his Golden Visa, Ronaldo’s case shows how sporting recognition can create lasting ties to a country, even though his career and home are now firmly rooted across the border in Saudi Arabia.
