Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke has on 3 October called for a Jantar Mantar protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Review (SIR) exercise.
The CJP called for the prosecution of Mr. Kumar and also demanded his resignation.
Ahead of the major protest, authorities have imposed tight security measures and traffic restrictions across New Delhi, with police and Border Security Force (BSF) jawans deployed at key locations.
More than 55 Delhi Metro stations were closed, several rail services curtailed and cancelled, citing the likelihood of “unruly crowd movement towards sensitive locations”. Several groups, including the CJP, claimed that the protesters were collected from across the country.
The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the temporary suspension of the internet and also provided additional personnel of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to the Delhi Police to strengthen security measures.
Internet services will remain suspended within a radius of 4 kilometers around the Janpath–Kartavya Path crossing from 10:00 PM on October 9 to 10:00 PM on October 10.
