Warangal sewerage project gets major boost as Center approves German proposal for ₹5,000 crore funding
Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation’s (GWMC) ₹ 5,257-crore Comprehensive Sewerage and Waste Management Transformation Project has received a major boost with the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) Screening Committee approving the Telangana Climate Resilient Urban Transformation Initiative (Telangana-crore CRUTI)050000000 for external assistance million) from German development bank KfW.
In a meeting held in New Delhi on Friday under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary, Urban Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Secretary TK Sreedevi, presented the proposal and outlined the programme’s objectives, priority investments and implementation framework. The committee subsequently agreed.
The flagship of the program is the construction of an underground sewerage network in Warangal along with the upgrading of sewage treatment facilities and measures to promote the reuse of treated sewage.
The Telangana-CRUTI program will also promote investments in uninterrupted water supply, stormwater management, water body rejuvenation, integrated solid waste management, blue-green infrastructure and sustainable mobility across priority urban local bodies (ULBs).
The proposal has received support from both the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the NITI Aayog. MoHUA recommended the proposal subject to the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR) by the Telangana government and their submission for technical review before signing the loan agreement.
NITI Aayog supported the proposal while suggesting a clear framework for project prioritization and greater focus on urban governance and incentives linked to reform. The government accepted these recommendations. The total cost of the program is estimated at ₹7,143 crore, of which ₹5,000 crore will come as external assistance and ₹2,143 crore will be contributed by the state government.
The program will also promote innovative funding mechanisms, institutional strengthening and convergence with flagship central programs such as AMRUT 2.0, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 and Urban Challenge Fund.
Telangana, UN-Habitat join hands for sustainable urban development
The Government of Telangana and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) on Thursday signed a Framework Cooperation Agreement to strengthen cooperation for sustainable, inclusive, resilient and future-proof urban development.
MA and UD Secretary and Director General of the National Institute of Urban Management (NIUM), TK Sreedevi and Director of the UN Habitat Regional Programs Division Patrick Canagasingham signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.
The partnership aims to position NIUM as a platform for urban innovation, knowledge sharing and capacity building, supporting Telangana’s vision to build more inclusive, resilient and future-ready cities and communities.
The cooperation will focus on sustainable infrastructure development, water and wastewater management, solid waste management, nature-based solutions, digital transformation, capacity building, project development and innovative urban financing.
NIUM will facilitate project identification and preparation, applied research, knowledge exchange and demonstration projects to urban local bodies (ULBs). Some of them will also serve as pilot sites for testing innovative solutions in areas such as climate resilience, heat mitigation, rainwater management, urban services and digital planning. Successful models will then be scaled up and replicated in other urban centers.
