CJP Protest Live Update: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and several other groups, including the All India Students’ Association, are scheduled to hold a proposed protest on Saturday, October 10. It is to be held at Jantar Mantar and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the election process.
CJP protest in Delhi on October 10
CJP leader Abhijit Dipke announced the protest on October 2 through a post on X. He called on people from across the country to gather in Delhi unless the Chief Election Commissioner resigns.
Security was increased without a permit to protest
Amidst this, security has been beefed up in Delhi ahead of the planned protest led by the CJP.
Earlier on Friday, Delhi Police had denied permission for the October 10 protest against Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar, a senior police officer said.
In a press conference, New Delhi Joint Commissioner of Police Nupur Prasad said that the late application and violation of rules during the previous protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were the reasons for the denial of the protest permit.
Section 162 saved
Meanwhile, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is currently in force in New Delhi. Reasonable preventive restrictions are set out within the section to maintain public order and safety, as stated by the police.
25,000 security personnel deployed
More than 25,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces, have been deployed in various parts of the national capital.
Metro stations closed, train cancelled
57 metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk and Kashmere Gate, will remain closed from 9pm on Friday until further notice.
It has been reported that several trains scheduled to arrive or depart from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations between 4:00 am and 2:00 pm on Saturday have been cancelled.
According to PTI, intensive checks have also been put in place at city border crossings, railway stations, bus terminals, hotels and other sensitive places.
Liquor shops across Delhi have also been ordered to remain closed on October 9 and 10.
What are the claims
The protesters raised several demands, including the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and initiation of criminal proceedings against him. It also seeks to freeze the SIR voter list, stop the upcoming elections, restore the January 2025 voter list and order an independent inquiry. It also seeks to repeal the 2023 Election Commission Appointments Act to create an independent and credible selection process.
