BJP Raitha Morcha in collaboration with sugarcane growers to find solutions to the problems, said Iranna Kadadi, president of the Morcha and former Rajya Sabha member in Belagavi on October 2.
“Sugarcane growers from some districts recently protested in Hubballi. We do not see it as a political movement, we have noticed that some of their demands are legitimate. We would like to send them a message that the Morcha is with them and is willing to work with them. We will hold a meeting with their leaders, discuss their demands and convey their concerns to the Union government,” Kadadi said.
According to him, some of the leaders like Shashikant Guruji lack clarity on the issues troubling sugarcane farmers. “Guruji has confused the recommended minimum selling price of sugar with the minimum support price. The Center allocates 25 types of crops for the market intervention mechanism by fixing the minimum support price. However, the minimum selling price of sugar is to ensure that factories do not sell at lower prices. Revision of the minimum selling price will not help the farmers’ cause,” Mr Kadadi said.
Mr. Kadadi said that the Union Government was taking several steps for the welfare of sugarcane farmers, though more steps needed to be taken. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started implementing the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan Commission. But it needs to be done gradually, over a period of years. There can be no change overnight,” he said.
He claimed that while the Union government has taken several steps in the right direction, the Karnataka government is yet to “do anything good for farmers”.
Mr. Kadadi said he objected to Guruji’s use of unparliamentary terms against Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. “However, Guruji expressed regret over the conditions and the matter ended,” he said.
