The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory for 2 October 2026 warning commuters of traffic restrictions and regulated movement around Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas in connection with the proposed protest.

Commuters have been advised to avoid the affected sections wherever possible, plan their journeys in advance and allow for extended travel time.

Jantar Mantar Traffic Alert: Routes to Avoid

As advised by Delhi Traffic Police, diversions and regulations will be in place around Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, GPO, Tolstoy Marg, Jantar Mantar Road, Parliament Street and adjoining roads.

Commuters have been asked to follow instructions issued by Delhi Traffic Police officials and use alternate routes whenever possible.

Delhi Police denied permission for Jantar Mantar protest

Delhi Police denied permission for a proposed protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while additional security personnel were deployed in and around New Delhi, officials said.

Called by the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, the protest is scheduled to begin at 11 am on Friday.

Police sources said about 3,000 to 4,000 people were expected to participate in the rally, leading to increased security in the area.

New Delhi has tightened security across the district

Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel have been deployed along with Delhi Police teams at Jantar Mantar and other key locations in New Delhi district, news agency PTI reported.

Barricades have been erected and additional personnel have been deployed at entry and exit points and other sensitive places to regulate movement and prevent any unauthorized gathering, sources said.

The organizers are seeking the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar

Organizers are seeking the resignation or impeachment of Kumar, alleging irregularities in the electoral rolls and the conduct of the elections.

They have also expressed concern over the Electoral Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Review (SIR) exercise, saying it raises questions about the protection of citizens’ voting rights.

Members of AAP, Youth Congress are expected to attend

AAP leaders and workers, Indian Youth Congress members and others are expected to participate in the protest, sources said.

The Delhi Police’s decision came a day after AISA National President Neha Bora, Bhushan and Jha announced the proposed rally at a press conference.

Bora said organizers had informed the Parliament Street police station about the rally, including expected attendance, timing and details of those responsible for its organisation.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia also called on people at X to join the rally and demanded Kumar’s resignation.

The protest comes amid anti-SIR demonstrations

The proposed protest comes amid demonstrations by opposition parties, student groups and civil society activists in Delhi over the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR exercise.
