Energy companies have been told to prepare for a rise in demand in the coming months

HYDERABAD

With a surge in power consumption expected in the coming months due to the impact of El Nino, Transco and Discoms have been told to prepare a comprehensive action plan to strengthen transmission and distribution works to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

In a meeting on ‘grid planning – summer action plan’ held here on Tuesday, TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V. Patil instructed officials to take all necessary steps to meet the rising power demand and additional load expected during summer.

On Tuesday, the areas served by TGSPDCL recorded an all-time high peak load of 12,044 megawatts at 3:52 p.m.

The previous high was 11,828 MW recorded on 9/11. In GHMC limits, maximum consumption was registered on May 22 of 4,782 MW and maximum power consumption of 101.07 million units on that day. The state’s all-time highest power consumption was recorded on March 13 this year when it was recorded at 344.4 MU and the all-time peak load reached 19,543 MW on September 9.

During the meeting, power company officials were told to prepare grid expansion plans considering not only the current requirements but also the projected demand for the next 5 to 10 years. Mr. Patil asked the officials to speed up work to increase the capacity of heavily loaded substations, feeders and power transformers.

Officials have been asked to prepare circular proposals for setting up new EHT and UHV substations, 33/11 KV substations, additional power transformers (PTRs), increasing transformer capacity, new 33 kV feeders, substations and connecting lines as per future requirements.

He directed the officials to prepare energy infrastructure plans for emerging industrial corridors like Madharam–Ghatkesar, Thimmapur–Kandukur, Eliminedu–Ibrahimpatnam and Dandumalkapur–Choutuppal and to work closely with Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) for timely implementation.

The CMD emphasized the need to focus on implementing dual-source power systems for data centers, IT parks, large industries and other critical consumers to ensure uninterrupted and quality power. He told the officials to identify the heavily loaded 33 KV and 11 KV feeders and take measures to strengthen the network if necessary.
