French Open 2026 Day 4 Lineup: Djokovic headlines Basavareddy’s action-packed 2nd round encounter
Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title and Nishesh Basavareddy’s dream French Open breakthrough will be a busy Day 4 program at Roland Garros on Wednesday. With Iga Swiatek, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud and rising Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca in action, Paris is in for another packed day of second-round clashes.
Djokovic returns to Court Philippe-Chatrier after surviving a difficult opening round test against French big-server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricardo. The 39-year-old dropped the first set before finding a rhythm under the night lights, but this time the Serbian great will have to deal with a completely different challenge.
The third seed faces another Frenchman in Valentin Royer, although a bigger battle may come from the heat of Paris itself. Djokovic was scheduled to play the third match of the day at Chatrier, meaning he could go into the warmest conditions of the afternoon after matches between Iga Swiatek and Elina Svitolina.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion would probably have preferred a different slot for the night session, but that honor instead went to Alexander Zverev’s clash with Tomas Machač.
Djokovic’s opening-round comeback showed again why he remains one of the most dangerous players at Roland Garros despite approaching 40. World No. 74 Royer will have his home crowd behind him, but beating Djokovic in five sets at Philippe-Chatier remains one of the toughest tasks in tennis.
BASAVAREDDY FINDS HE CONTINUES HIS DREAM RUN
While Djokovic continues to chase history, one of the stories of the tournament so far belongs to Nishesh Basavareddy.
The 21-year-old American wild card of Indian origin announced himself on one of tennis’ biggest stages after stunning seventh seed Taylor Fritz in four sets during the opening round. Basavareddy, ranked 148th in the world, scored the biggest win of his young career on his Roland Garros main draw debut with a 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 win over Court Suzanne Lenglen.
What made the performance stand out was not only the excitement, but also the composure.
Basavareddy repeatedly troubled Fritz with disguised shots, changes of pace and fearless shooting, frustrating the higher-ranked American more and more as the match wore on. In the fourth set, the Paris crowd completely fell for the underdog story, chanting “Nishesh! Nishesh!” after he closed out the win.
The win also continued a breakthrough season for the former Stanford star, who already outplayed his idol Novak Djokovic in his Australian Open debut earlier this year.
Now, Basavareddy returns to the All-American in a second-round clash against Alex Michelsen on Court 13. It may not have the glamor of a Djokovic or Swiatek match, but after Sunday’s performance, the young Indian-American has suddenly become one of the tournament’s must-watch stories.
SWIATEK, ZVEREV FACE BASIC TESTS
Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek continues her title defense against Czech youngster Sára Bejlek in the opening match at Philippe-Chatrier.
Swiatek cruised through her first-round clash against Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2 and again looked extremely comfortable on the Paris clay despite briefly needing treatment for a blister on her right hand. The Pole remains one of the strongest favorites in the women’s draw and will be expected to make a quick comeback.
Later in the evening, Alexander Zverev headlined the night session against the dangerous Czech Tomáš Macháč.
The German second seed started strongly in the opening round against Benjamin Bonzi and gradually grew into the match after a somewhat slow start. However, Machac presents a much tougher test. Cech is one of the purest baseline starters on tour and has the ability to trouble elite opposition when fully fit and confident.
Still, Zverev’s excellent serve and comfort on clay make him the favorite going into the match.
ROLAND GARROS DAY
Elsewhere, Casper Ruud takes on Hamad Medjedovic on Court Suzanne Lenglen, while Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini and Andrey Rublev are also in action on the outdoor courts.
Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca, already one of the breakout names of the season, takes on Dino Prizmic on Court 14, while Tommy Paul takes on Lorenzo Sonega in another interesting second round battle.
However, Day 4’s focus will largely remain on two very different paths.
One belongs to Djokovic, who at the age of 39 is still chasing another Grand Slam history.
The second belongs to Basavareddy, a wild card of Indian origin who has suddenly become one of the stories of Roland Garros 2026.
