Extreme heatwave hits AP as north Vijayawada soars to 47.3C

There seemed to be no respite in sight for people from the extreme heat in central Andhra Pradesh as the day’s maximum temperature was 47.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

While the highest temperature was recorded at Mulukudur in Guntur district (47.7°C), other places that recorded temperatures above 47°C were Gurazala in Palnadu district (47.6°C), Piduguralla in Palnadu (47.4°C), Kanchikacherla and Vijayawada North in NTR district and Inkollu (47.3°C) and Bapatla (47.3°C) district.

Meanwhile, Vijayawada East and Central regions recorded 45.1°C and Vijaywada West 44.7°C.

Vijayawada felt like a furnace even at 7 pm when temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius. Several places in Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, Nandyal and YSR Kadapa districts also hovered around 40°C at 7 pm, according to real-time weather information available at the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES).

On Tuesday, according to the AP State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), severe heat waves were recorded in 15 mandals while heat waves were recorded in 116 mandals. Temperatures above 44°C were recorded in 125 mandals in 14 districts.

According to weather experts, the extreme heat is pushing people to the brink as the human body can tolerate an ambient temperature of 37°C. In Vijayawada, many busy intersections remain abandoned while informal sector workers continue to work under forced labor.

While there have been reports of heat stroke deaths, both officials from the state health department and the disaster management office said that Andhra Pradesh has not reported any deaths so far.

Orange alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, remain in force for central AP and several northern regions till May 29. APSDMA said severe heat waves are likely in 68 mandals on May 27 (Wednesday). The districts of Polavaram, Dr. may be the most affected. BR Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari and Eluru.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and thunderstorm warnings have been issued in several districts of Rayalaseema and northern parts on Tuesday. From 7 pm, only light showers were recorded in these places, according to the DES.
