Lovely Professional University protest turns violent: Protesters clash with police, throw stones over ‘rape’ case | Today’s news
A demonstration at Lovely Professional University (LPU) over an alleged case of intra-campus rape turned violent on Sunday evening. Protesters reportedly clashed with police officials and threw stones, while vehicles were also set on fire. The police resorted to lathi charge around 8 pm, news agency ANI reported.
A group of students also blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara state highway, causing a massive traffic jam in the afternoon. The private university dismissed the allegations as rumours, while the police said a special investigation team would be formed to probe the matter.
2. DIG (Jalandhar Range) Naveen Singla said that the FIR was registered based on the statement of the students. “The matter will be investigated and forensic analysis, CCTV analysis and phone analysis will be done. The investigation will be done together with the student leaders,” he said.
3. “We want justice,” purported videos that surfaced on social media show a sea of people shouting slogans, damaging vehicles and clay pots, and setting some items on fire. Some protesters also invaded university centers and damaged ATMs.
4. In a statement, the management of Lovely Professional University (LPU) claimed that there was no truth in the ‘rumours’, with registrar Monica Gulati saying that some anti-social elements were spreading ‘false’, ‘baseless’ and ‘fabricated’ allegations.
5. In a statement, the LPU authorities said that it appeared to be a deliberate and concerted attempt to damage the university’s reputation and tarnish its image. Students, parents and the public have been asked not to believe, spread or disseminate such rumors and to rely on information communicated through the university’s official channels, the university said.
