Early winter in Delhi? The minimum temperature settles below the season’s normal; more rain likely on Sunday | Today’s news
Delhi woke up to cloudy skies on Sunday, September 27, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms and gusty winds for today. The Met Office has issued a “yellow warning” for light rainfall.
“Overcast skies are expected to persist in general. One or two spells of very light to light rain is expected at most places,” an IMD official said, adding that the rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
From Saturday 20:30 to Sunday 8:30, 5 mm of rain fell in the city. For the first time in seven years, rain has hit Delhi so late in September.
Early winter in Delhi?
The minimum temperature settled below the seasonal average at 21 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The weather service has predicted cloudy skies with a maximum temperature expected to touch 31 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD, temperatures will remain mostly below average throughout the coming week.
While the onset of winter in Delhi usually begins in late October, the below-average temperatures this week brought a welcome dip. However, social media users have already declared this drop in mercury as the beginning of winter.
“Delhi weather suddenly feels like early winter. Feels like the season has changed overnight,” the user said. “Kambal lene ki naubat aa gayi thi kal😭 (I had to use a blanket last night),” added another.
A user said: “I hope it stays like this. Otherwise Delhi winters are felt only in October. That’s too late, October. So if it’s happening, let’s hope it stays.”
“Just wake up and feel the chill in the fan.. not a wintery feeling but definitely a colder day compared to last year 🔥🙌,” said another user.
However, the netizen rightly pointed out that the cold weather is due to Cyclone Arnab. “Don’t get carried away…it’s the effect of Cyclone Arnab in the Bay of Bengal over the Indian coast of West Bengal. In a week the temperature will rise again to 36° and it seems like 41° to me,” commented a Netizen.
“It happened last time too, but the cold only lasted 10-15 days…😭😭” added another non-sufferer.
Delhi AQI
Air quality was recorded as “satisfactory” at 9 am, with an air quality index (AQI) of 54, according to the Sameer app. As winter approaches, air quality is expected to worsen.
According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 to 100 as “satisfactory”, 101 to 200 as “moderate”, 201 to 300 as “poor”, 301 to 400 as “very poor” and 401 to 5.
