Kottarakara native’s organs donated after brain death

Another deceased donor organ donation was carried out in the state on Saturday after the family of Kottarakkar native G. Radhakrishnan Potti, 67, who was declared a stroke following brain haemorrhage at KIMSHEALTH Hospital, agreed to donate his organs. Three major organs were removed – both kidneys and a liver – as well as the skin and cornea.

While the liver and one of the kidneys were allocated to end-stage patients at KIMSHEALTH Hospital, the other kidney was allocated to end-stage renal patients at Government Medical College Kottayam. The skin would be harvested and stored in the skin bank at Govt Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, while the cornea would be harvested by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here.

The police have created a dedicated green corridor for the ambulance transporting the kidney by road from Thiruvananthapuram to GMC Kottayam.

Radhakrishna Potti, a former employee of the Finance Department of Kollam Collectorate, was admitted to KIMSHEALTH hospital after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage on 21 September. However, on Friday evening, the brain stem was declared dead, after which his wife and daughter informed about their willingness to donate organs.

The Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (K-SOTTO) coordinated the organ recipient identification and organ allocation processes.
