Arrangements finalized for September 28 by-polls in Kerala Local Ward: SEC

By-elections to 38 local bodies, including two corporation wards and three municipal wards, will be held in Kerala on Monday. All arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections have been completed, State Election Commissioner N. Seshadrinathan said here on Saturday.

The poll results will be closely watched as these are the first by-polls to local bodies after the Congress-led UDF government came to power in Kerala in May.

The elections will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A total of 126 candidates are in the running, of which 62 are women and 64 are men. The commission organized 385 polling stations.

The counting of polled votes will begin on September 29 at 10 p.m.

Voter lists updated and published on August 19 will be used for ballot boxes. There are a total of 3,09,713 voters in the final list, which includes 1,64,241 women, 1,45,468 men and four transgender voters.

The 38 wards in 12 districts include two corporation wards – Ayyappankavu in Kochi Corporation and Kuttichira in Kozhikode Corporation – three municipal wards, three district panchayat wards, seven block panchayats and 23 grama panchayat wards.
