Veeramani case: Stalin says DMK regime does not protect anyone

Former chief minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday said it was reprehensible for the group to spread false allegations against the DMK in connection with the handling of the child molestation case involving industrialist and founder of Gem Granites Veeramani. He said that during the DMK regime, no order was issued to protect anyone in the case.

He said in a statement that Mr. Veeramani has been arrested in the case and anyone who consorted with him or tried to protect him should not be spared even if he held high positions.

“That is DMK’s stand. The outcome of the case should deter anyone from committing such a crime in future. It is my wish as a party leader, family head and a person with conscience,” he said.

Mr. Stalin said that in cases involving crimes against women and girls, proper action was taken without any “frivolousness”, charge-sheets were filed and the accused were punished by the courts. “This is a truth known to the public. The DMK was not forced to rescue anyone,” he said.

He also said that the former DMK government never tried to protect anyone as the TVK government is allegedly doing now. “Though the affected women lodged complaints with TVK MLAs and district secretaries, no action was taken and compromise was attempted,” he said.

Mr Stalin said the ruling party should stop the “reprehensible” act of using the tragedy of the young girls as a tool in the by-elections and spreading falsehoods. “Getting justice will be everyone’s goal,” he said.
