The family claims that the police jeep deliberately hit the bike, they are demanding a case of attempted murder

The family of a youth injured when a police jeep allegedly rammed into the motorcycle he was riding has accused Pudukad police station officials of deliberately hitting the bike and demanded that they be booked for attempted murder.

Prasanna Shaju, mother of the injured youth Amal, claimed that the incident was not a road accident but a deliberate act to kill the three youths. Four policemen, including the station officer, have already been suspended in connection with the incident.

The incident took place on July 16 when Amal and his friends Vishnu and Abhishek were riding a motorbike. According to the family, the police signaled them to stop, but the youths did not stop out of fear. A police jeep is said to have chased them and rear-ended the motorcycle, throwing all three onto the road.

Abhishek suffered serious head injuries and required intensive care for five days.

Ms Shaju has now released the audio and video footage that was automatically recorded on Amal’s iPhone, which was seized by the police. The family says the tape contains crucial evidence of the officers’ behavior after the incident.

In the recording, a voice can be heard saying, “If we had increased the speed a little more, the young would have died before him.” In another exchange, where one police officer is said to ask if the injured youths should be taken to hospital, another is said to reply that they should not go there as it could be found that they were involved in the accident.

The suspended were identified as Pudukad SHO Mahesh and civilian constables Yadukrishnan, Naveen Kumar and Faisal.

Ms. Shaju said she submitted complaints along with medical records and video footage to senior police officials, including the ADGP, Thrissur DIG and the district police chief. She alleged that though the district police chief had directed the Varandappilly police to register an FIR, the case was not registered.

The family also approached Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan and accused the police of delaying the event. Ms Shaju said the family withheld the footage for nearly two months after senior officers assured them of justice, but decided to release it after alleging continued inaction.
