“A person from my company was fired today. On the spot, fired, bags packed, left. No notice. She was on sale but it still made me wonder if it’s that much job security today. They can fire me anytime they feel I’m not valuable to their organization and that freaked me out,” he wrote.
He said the incident made him question whether even a small mistake could jeopardize his job. “One code mistake and I’m out? Who knows? Or maybe without any crash I could be out. I’ve seen it in previous organizations, I joined this company two weeks ago and I don’t want to think about it all, but since that incident, this is all I can think about. Tomorrow or the week after, I might not have a job.”
Changing jobs is “not a solution”
The man added that changing the company doesn’t necessarily feel like a solution because layoffs and sudden job losses are no longer limited to one part of the industry. “And the thing is, merging with other companies is not the solution because it’s not a startup thing, it’s happening everywhere, from startups to FAANG. Where to go?” he wrote
He also explained that he had also become concerned about routine financial obligations. “I also got a six month gym membership two days ago, if I get kicked out I’m in serious trouble, I have a month’s rent deposit as a down payment, everything’s going to be a mess too. I know there’s no point thinking about what didn’t happen, but seeing it happen shakes you up.”
