‘Main jhooth nahi bolunga’: Rohit Sharma reveals the comfort food he craved during sleepless nights of Test matches

NEW DELHI: Former India captain Rohit Sharma has revealed the unlikely comfort food he would turn to during sleepless nights in the middle of Test matches, recalling how the pressure of his favorite format often left him jittery and craving a late-night snack.Rohit, who played 67 Tests for India between 2013 and 2024, shared his midnight cravings on his TV show ‘Family Full House with Rohit Sharma’. He revealed that his mother’s homemade banana wafers became his go-to food during those long Test match nights.“Yes, that happened. I didn’t want to say anything but whenever I played a Test match I was very nervous. So I made it special at the time of the Test match because this was my favorite format to play a Test match,” Rohit said. The former opener called time on his Test career last year after scoring 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score in the format was 212.

“I don’t need it for nervousness”

Rohit explained that the demands of Test cricket often made it difficult for him to switch off after a day of playing.“Because playing a Test match is not an easy format. No format is easy but a Test match has its own challenges. So I was always nervous for a Test match and because of the nervousness I couldn’t sleep so I stayed up all night,” he said. Those sleepless nights often brought with them the desire to eat something.“That’s why you always get used to eating little food. That’s why I always kept my comfort food with me that my mom always made, which was banana waffles,” said Rohit. The snack came with a personal touch. Rohit revealed that the banana wafers were made by his mother, who used the baking method instead of frying.

“It wasn’t fried. My mother cooked her food, she taught me how to bake it, and I always took it with me. Whenever I wanted to eat it, I ate it,” he said. For a batsman who has dealt with the mental and physical demands of the longest format for years, a simple home-cooked snack offered a familiar taste of home amid the intensity of Test cricket.
