The investigation into the Brydon Cars Derby assault has been halted by police to face a regulator investigation

England quick Brydon Carse will face no further police action after an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby last month was closed. The development removes one layer of uncertainty surrounding the 31-year-old, although he remains the subject of a separate investigation by the cricket regulator.

Shots of Cars in handcuffs and surrounded by police appeared on social media following the incident in the early hours of August 23. Carse was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was later arrested after officers took his details.

Derbyshire Police subsequently confirmed they were investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. In a statement issued on Friday, the force said: “The investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city center has been closed.”

Police added: “Officers attended Molly Malones in The Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday August 23. The man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was arrested after officers obtained his details.”

CARSE IS STILL FACING A REGULATORY PROBE

While the police investigation is now over, Carse’s situation is not completely resolved. The cricket regulator will continue to look into the incident, with the regulator yet to comment on the latest development. The England and Wales Cricket Board and Carse have also been asked to comment.

The incident has already cost Carse a place in the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Test captain Joe Root said he was “cut up” by the situation and revealed he had spoken out in the England dressing room over the latest off-field controversy.

Carse was subsequently left out of the England squad for the third Test against Pakistan and the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, despite being available for selection. The ECB said it needed to “work through the issues” surrounding the Derby incident and take time to “properly reset”.

England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum also said earlier this week that Carse needed to “get things sorted” before returning to international cricket.

SRI LANKA ENGLISH SERIES IN PROGRESS

England are already in action in the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, with the Three Lions taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. The third T20I is scheduled for September 19 in Manchester before the teams switch to a three-match ODI series from September 22.

Carse was not selected for the Sri Lanka series, meaning his immediate return to international cricket remains uncertain. England had already completed their three-Test series against Pakistan 3-0, while Carse went on to play for Durham at county level.
