‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery’ and ‘Bakery on Wheels’ launched at Bengaluru Central Jail

The ‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery’ and ‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery on Wheels’ initiatives were launched at the Central Jail at Parappana Agrahara, Bengaluru in collaboration with HCL Foundation by Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Karnataka Alok Kumar on Thursday.

The program aims to generate additional income for the government through the sale of bakery products, while helping inmates develop vocational skills and prepare for life after release.

During the program, Mr. Alok Kumar inspected the bakery products prepared by the inmates and appreciated their taste and quality. He also interacted with the inmates and emphasized the importance of quality and hygiene in the preparation of products.

The ministry said newly sentenced inmates who undergo training in bakery equipment and product preparation will be given certificates to help them acquire skills that could support their rehabilitation and livelihood after release.

“Nava Sankalpa Bakery on Wheels” was subsequently branded. The mobile bakery units will sell quality bakery products at various court complexes and bus stations across Bengaluru.

Memorandum of understanding signed

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Department of Prisons and Correctional Services and the National Law College of India (NLSIU) in Bengaluru have signed an MoU to strengthen legal aid, prisoner welfare and prison reforms in the state.

The MoU was signed at the prisons headquarters in Bengaluru on Friday.

Under the agreement, NLSIU’s Criminal Justice Clinic, through its lawyers, students and researchers, would identify elderly and seriously ill inmates and help facilitate their release.

The clinic will also organize legal aid camps in prisons and provide pro bono legal representation to marginalized accused in custody.

Another key part of the MoU is to assist the prison department in devising a policy for early release of elderly and terminally ill prisoners in line with the Supreme Court judgment in NALSA Vs. Union of India. NLSIU will further assist the department in researching and drafting laws and policies relating to prisons in Karnataka and support capacity building programs for parasocial workers, convict lawyers and lawyers working in prisons.

The university will also cooperate with the department on other initiatives focused on prison reforms. He will train and provide adequate supervision to prison staff and students involved in carrying out these activities.
