YSRCP accuses AP government of not fulfilling social security promises

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has accused the TDP-led coalition government of deceiving the people by making new promises on welfare schemes ahead of the local body elections and taking credit for initiatives introduced during Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tenure.

Addressing the media at Tadepallion on Wednesday, YSRCP General Secretary Gadikota Srikanth Reddy said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has failed women, farmers and youth by breaking his election promises. He claimed that the government is now reviving the same promises with a view to local opinion polls.

Mr. Srikanth Reddy alleged that after the coming of the coalition government, new pensions were not sanctioned to many eligible beneficiaries belonging to weaker sections. He demanded that pension arrears be paid retrospectively from the date of eligibility of the beneficiaries and not from the date of sanction.

He alleged that persons with disabilities were forced to bypass government offices to process their pension applications.

Contrasting the current system with that used during the YSRCP government, Mr Srikanth Reddy said pensions were then delivered to the beneficiaries at their doorsteps and volunteers helped them with the required formalities. He claimed that the coalition government had dismantled the scheme and reduced the number of beneficiaries for various reasons.

The government was now asking people to make new applications, saying they would be judged on merit, in what it described as an exercise aimed at local body elections. He claimed that the number of pensioners, which was around 69 million during the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, has now come down by nearly six million.

Mr. Srikanth Reddy disputed the government’s claims regarding the allotted land. He said that a government order issued during the previous YSRCP regime had provided for issuance of title deeds to eligible residents who remained in possession of the disputed allotted plots for 10 years.

He claimed that the government was projecting the conversion of such allotted land into freehold as a new initiative, although it was a consequence of an earlier government order.

He accused the coalition government of emphasizing the measures with a view to securing votes in local body elections.

Referring to Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar’s statement that Andhra Pradesh has been allotted five million houses, Mr. Srikanth Reddy said that this figure was insignificant compared to the 30 million pattas distributed to women during the YSRCP government.
