Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi, former partner of Bopanna, confirms performance at Asian Games

Pakistan Tennis Federation President Aisam ul Haq Qureshi has confirmed that the men’s doubles will feature in the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The 46-year-old former Grand Slam player who reached the men’s doubles final at the US Open alongside India’s Rohan Bopannahe said he decided to compete after assessing his fitness and continuing with the sport.

“Yes, I am the president of the PTF and I will fulfill my duties as the president at the Asian Games, but since I am fully fit and still playing tennis regularly, I have decided to compete in the doubles,” Aisam said on Wednesday.

Aisam will be part of the six-member Pakistan tennis team that also includes veteran Aqeel Khan, Muhammad Shoaib, Muzammil Murtaza, Maheen Aftab and Ushna Sohail.

Pakistan will compete in both men’s and women’s events at the Asian Games. Aisam said the team had a combination of experience and youth and revealed that he had been training with the team before the competition.

“I trained with the rest of the players in the team and did my best to help the younger players in the squad,” he said.

Aisam, who became the PTF president in 2024 after a long career on the international circuit, said that despite its limitations, Pakistan tennis continues to move forward.

Pakistan is also scheduled to host the Billie Jean King Cup in October, which will feature players from 10 countries. Aisam said the tournament will also be used to raise awareness about breast cancer.

“The event will also serve to raise awareness about breast cancer,” he said.

Aisam remained Pakistan’s leading and most respected player on the international circuit for several years, regularly competing in Grand Slam doubles tournaments before moving into tennis administration.

His partnership with Bopanna formed one of the most remarkable India-Pakistan men’s doubles combinations, with the pair reaching the final of the US Open.
