The east-west pipeline is vital to Saudi Arabia’s oil exports since the war in Iran has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi oil exports through the Red Sea port at the end of the pipeline have more than doubled, according to the International Energy Agency.
On Sunday, Houthi fighters said they used drones and missiles to attack a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. The attack on the southern base of Sharurah targeted “weapons depots and command and control centers that direct the aggression against our nation and people,” Houthi army spokesman Yahya Saree wrote on X.
Clashes between Iran’s Houthi allies and Yemeni government forces, backed by Riyadh, have increased this week amid the US war with Iran.
The ongoing clashes follow a week-long Houthi offensive that led the group to capture the rest of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several strategic islands, consolidating their control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the sea’s southern entrance.
