Only genuine colleges will get fee reimbursement, says Revanth

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy assured that all genuine colleges would get their fees reimbursed gradually, while the “others” would be kept under control.

Rejecting the allegations leveled by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Mr Reddy told the assembly that ₹200 crore would be released every month from this year to meet the ₹2,500 crore required for the scheme. The money would be deposited in the students’ accounts as major irregularities were noticed in the colleges’ accounts.

Mr. Reddy said he wants to avail the 75% fee reimbursement provided to ST students and 40% provided to SC students by the central government, which has set conditions for direct transfer to students. The refund of fees, he emphasized, was meant for the benefit of the students, not for the management of the universities.

KCR blackmailed colleges

The CM alleged that the previous BRS government, led by K. Chandrasekhar Rao, used vigilance investigations against colleges as a means of encouraging defection while selectively increasing fees for institutions favored by the then government.

According to him, the status of vigilance reports ordered under the previous regime is still unknown. He alleged that colleges that were close to Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao were favored while others were denied fee revisions.

He questioned why the college management remained silent for almost 10 years when the fees for payment of fees piled up. “During those 10 years, they didn’t speak a single day or stage a single protest,” he added.

The chief minister also alleged that a university linked to a close associate of KCR had more than ₹400 crore in its bank account. “Where did the money come from? Is education a business?” he asked.
