Credit thief Vaibhav: Ishan Kishan teases Sooryavanshi after Duleep Trophy triumph

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became one of the unlikely talking points of the Duleep Trophy triumph in the East Zone, with the 15-year-old repeatedly backing his captain’s DRS calls during the final. However, Ishan Kishan feels that the teenager may have taken too much credit for these reviews.

Sooryavanshi participated in two successful reviews in the final, helps East Zone reverse decisions against Ricky Bhui and Smaran Ravichandran. His only failed challenge came when Devdutt Padikkal was caught LBW, but his growing reputation for DRS influence became one of the entertaining subplots of the title-winning East Zone campaign.

After East Zone ended their 13-year wait for the Duleep TrophyKishan and Sooryavanshi looked back on those moments in a light-hearted interaction shared on X. The East Zone captain jokingly hinted that the teenager had become the face of reviews that weren’t always entirely due to him.

“Everybody’s already taken credit for those reviews. Even though I was the one who was going to do the review, he comes in and says out of the blue, ‘I’m coming to you,’ and then the internet is like, ‘Vaibhav, oh my God!’ Vaibhav was the one who played the role really well,” said Kishan.

CREDIT THEFT IS GETTING HIS SPEAK

Sooryavanshi was quick to defend himself, pointing out that there was one situation where Kishan strayed from a decision and he had to step in.

“And when you left my field, who did the appraisal then? You should mention that as well,” Sooryavanshi interjected.

Kishan readily conceded before turning serious and praising the youngster’s impact in the East Zone dressing room.

“That was Vaibhav himself. But it’s very good to have him in the team because, you know, he’s more than just a very good player. He’s a very nice guy who cares about every person in the team, be it junior or senior,” Kishan said.

The captain then realized that he might have made one small mistake when describing his vice-captain.

“Actually, you’re the younger one here. Sorry, sorry!” Kishan joked.

KISHAN SEES BIG THINGS AHEAD

Joking aside, Sooryavanshi’s contribution went far beyond his involvement with DRS. He scored 44 off 37 balls in the final and had earlier made 92 in the semi-final against Central Zone, also successfully handling control after taking over as stand-in captain.

In the semi-finals and final, Sooryavanshi was involved in three successful DRS challenges, with only one failed review in the title clash. His presence also added another layer to the campaign in which East Zone eventually secured their first Duleep Trophy title in 13 years.

Kishan believes that the best for the teenager is still far away.

“I hope he becomes even more dangerous than he is today. I don’t think it will be his first or last (performance like that). I think he will play a lot more games like this and continue to perform the way he is doing now,” he said.

For Sooryavanshi, the Duleep Trophy triumph was another step in an already rapid rise. And if Kishan’s playful “credit stealer” is anything to go by, the teenager has become quite comfortable making his presence felt among the older players.
