US-Iran war: US ‘Warthog’ and F-15 jets damaged in overnight Iranian airstrikes in Jordan, report says | Today’s news
Several U.S. military aircraft were damaged in Iranian airstrikes at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan overnight, CBS reporter Jennifer Jacobs reported on Wednesday.
One A-10 Thunderbolt, known as a Warthog, was hit and left with a missing wing, while about eight F-15s suffered light damage and were returned to service, she added.
She said: “US forces in Jordan fired more than 30 Patriot missiles to defend against Iranian attacks.”
The alleged “overnight damage” came after the US attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a US Navy warship.
In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched attacks on eight tankers and two warships, including a base in Jordan.
On Wednesday, the US Central Command said that no US Navy warships had been hit and that “all IRGC attack attempts have failed”.
He added: “US forces have successfully destroyed 10 Iranian tankers in the last week alone. These vessels were part of a multi-billion shadow network that funds the IRGC and Iran cannot defend them.”
The US-Iran war is escalating
The war between Iran and the US escalated in late August after the US attacked two Iranian launch sites on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz in the first known attacks by the US military since late July.
The US has said Iran is trying to launch sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz – a shipping lane that has become the focus of regional tensions and diplomatic efforts.
“US forces conducted limited and precise strikes against IRGC mine-laying forces that pose an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said a day later.
Iran said in a statement issued by Iran’s state radio station that several Revolutionary Guards and Iranian civilians were killed and wounded in the US attack on Larak Island.
In retaliation, Iran fired ballistic missiles at two American bases in Jordan. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said a combined missile and drone operation, dubbed “Punishment of the Aggressor”, hit the King Hussein and Al Azraq bases in Jordan.
On Sept. 8, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had seized a U.S. submarine drone in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran has blockaded in the months-long Middle East war.

On September 9, Iran launched new attacks against US targets in the Middle East in retaliation for US attacks on Iranian oil tankers, drawing the enemy deeper into the war.
The United States and Iran are locked in a stalemate six months into the war, with Iran maintaining its grip on the Strait of Hormuz and Washington pushing a campaign to strangle Iran’s ports and economy.
Iran has maintained a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports, since the outbreak of war in late February.
“Iran war may drag on until 2029”
Top White House advisers have privately warned US President Donald Trump of the possibility that the war with Iran could continue until the end of his term, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing US officials.
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others discussed with Trump the possibility that Tehran could continue to resist U.S. pressure under the blockade and other military measures, which could prolong the conflict beyond Inauguration Day in January 2029, according to the report.
The private discussions contrast with Trump’s public comments on Wednesday that the war would end “immediately” after November’s midterm elections because Iran “can’t take it anymore.”
The Journal said a protracted conflict would strain U.S. military resources and threaten widespread disruption to global oil markets. The report also said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has already extended some Middle East deployments to 2027, while the Pentagon plans to keep some air defense units in the region without a firm end date.
Trump has also backed a longer-term pressure campaign built around a naval blockade and sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to scrap its nuclear program, the report said.
