Intermediate Board urged to focus on competency based assessment

There is a need to move beyond traditional question-setting approaches and focus on questions that assess students’ understanding, application, analysis, reasoning and other competencies, said Indrani Bhaduri, CEO and Head of PARAKH-NCERT.

Prof. Addressing a meeting at the Board of Intermediate Education in Andhra Pradesh (BIEAP) office in Tadepalli on Wednesday, Bhaduri emphasized the importance of strengthening assessment procedures in line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

She appreciated the initiatives taken by BIEAP to align its academic and assessment practices with the goals of NEP 2020. She said the adoption of the Integrated Test Management System (ITMS) by the board was an important step towards technology-enabled, systematic and transparent assessment processes.

Prof. Bhaduri also highlighted the role of the PARAKH (Performance Appraisal, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) taxonomy in strengthening competency-based assessment.

The PARAKH taxonomy was intended to be a key framework that would guide the development of competency-based questions and facilitate the gradual transformation of assessment practices across the education system, she said.

She added that the successful implementation of these reforms requires active cooperation between school education boards and other stakeholders.
