One held for growing cannabis on ‘FRA land’

Police officials examine cannabis plants seized from a cotton field in Neradigonda mandal of Adilabad district on Wednesday.

Nerandigonda police in Adilabad district on Wednesday seized around 125 hemp (ganja) plants allegedly grown as an intercrop between cotton plants in Boragaon village and arrested a 33-year-old man.

The value of the seized plants was estimated to be around ₹12.50 crore.

Accused Ade Kapil allegedly cultivated the banned crop on 3.7 acres of land. The title deed for the land is in his wife’s name under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), police said.

According to the police, the accused confessed to growing cannabis without his wife’s knowledge to make a quick buck as the income from the farm was not enough to support his family.

The police have registered a case under the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and have started an investigation.
