India’s first high-speed train project is entering a key phase, with a prototype developed in the country expected to begin track testing from May to June 2027, which may pave the way for its deployment on the first operational section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor late next year.
Addressing the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event in Vadodara on Tuesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the first body frame of the indigenous bullet train has been completed and sent for “compression test”, which verifies the frame’s ability to withstand high pressure without deformation.
“By May or June next year, India’s own train will be testing on the tracks,” Vaishnaw said. He added that testing will continue for two to four months, after which the train will be inaugurated.

The timeline means the BEML-built train could potentially complete its test program around the second half of 2027. If the inspections and trials go ahead as planned, it could become a candidate for deployment on the first operational section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor late next year, the officials said on condition of anonymity. The government is working to open the corridor in phases, with the Surat-Bilimora section earmarked as the first section to be commissioned sometime late next year.
The development of the train comes as the construction of the 508-km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is progressing through Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Vaishnaw said work on the Surat-Vapi section is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by December this year. The government has already indicated that the first connections on the corridor will be introduced in stages and not wait for the construction of the entire route.
The first operational section is expected to be Surat-Bilimora, followed by expansion of services towards Vapi, Ahmedabad and eventually Mumbai. The phased strategy is intended to allow the rail system and its infrastructure to be tested in live traffic while construction continues on the remaining parts of the corridor.

The corridor, India’s first high-speed rail project, is designed for an operating speed of 320 km/h and will have 12 stations. Once fully operational, it is expected to reduce the Mumbai-Ahmedabad journey to around two hours from the current 6-7 hours.
Vaishnaw also highlighted the potential impact of the project on Gujarat-Maharashtra connectivity. Addressing a rally in Vadodara, he said that passengers traveling from Vadodara to Mumbai would eventually complete the journey in about 90 minutes.
BEML’s train, meanwhile, represents a parallel effort to create domestic manufacturing capacity for high-speed rail. The eight-car train set, known as B28, is being developed at BEML’s Bengaluru plant.
Its first body frame has now reached the structural testing stage. The squeeze test is an important verification exercise before a train progresses to more extensive testing, including dynamic tests on a high-speed rail line.
The train is being developed under wider pressure for greater localization of railway technology. Placing the program within the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy, Vaishnaw argued that the aim is not only to introduce bullet trains but also to build the engineering and manufacturing ecosystem needed to manufacture them in India.
The minister’s remarks also underscored the broader transformation underway in Indian Railways. He said the government is modernizing operating and reservation systems, construction practices and freight infrastructure, while developing new wagon designs and other technologies.

He cited the Chenab Bridge and the Mizoram Rail Link Project as major infrastructure achievements and said that 280 railway stations had been rebuilt and about 36,000 km of railway tracks had been added.
However, the next major milestone for the bullet train program will be the transition from factory-level development to testing on the high-speed rail corridor.
If the BEML train reaches the tracks in May-June 2027 as scheduled and successfully completes the subsequent two-to-four-month test window, the timing would broadly coincide with the planned phased commissioning of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project.
This could allow India’s first domestically-built high-speed train to move from a technology demonstration to the country’s first operational bullet train service in late 2027 – a major step in both the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project and India’s ambition to develop its own high-speed rail manufacturing capacity.
