With most of India reeling under a heat wave during this peak summer season, Brahmapuri in Maharashtra recorded the highest maximum temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Nearly 29 weather monitoring stations across the country recorded the maximum temperature above 45 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Ayanagar and Ridge stations recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.6°C.
The meteorological agency issued a red alert for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and predicted “severe” heat conditions on May 25. Several states are on orange alert, including Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka. In Delhi, the yellow alert will remain intact till May 27.

According to the latest weather bulletin, Delhi will witness clear skies today which is expected to become partly cloudy in the afternoon. While heat conditions will continue to prevail, residents can expect some relief later in the day as very light showers, thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms and strong ground winds are likely today. “Increase in maximum temperatures by 1-2°C during the next 24 hours, no major change till 27 May 2026 and then decrease by 6-8°C. Increase in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C during the next 24 hours, no major change till 29 May 2026 and then decrease by 4-5°C,” the IMD said.
When to expect a drop in maximum temperatures?
The Met office has predicted that there will be no relief from the “severe” heat wave in the coming days as such conditions are expected to prevail over central and northwest India till May 31; Eastern and adjacent peninsular India by May 27 or 29. “Reduction in maximum temperatures likely from May 29 onwards,” the IMD said in its latest weather bulletin.
Residents of Punjab can expect a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 2-3°C till May 26, while the rest of India is unlikely to see any significant change in temperature in the coming days.
Heat wave warning
Heat waves are likely in the following areas during the period below:
- In isolated pockets over Madhya Pradesh till 30th May with severe heat waves till 28th May.
- In isolated pockets over Vidarbha till 29th May with severe heat waves till 27th May.
- In isolated places of Chhattisgarh till May 27.
- In isolated pockets of Odisha till May 28.
- In isolated areas of Bihar, Jharkhand and Telangana till May 26.
- In isolated places of Jammu and Kashmir on May 26 and 27.
- In isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh from May 26 to 28.
Moving to hot and humid weather conditions, the Gangetic region of West Bengal may experience such weather till May 26. Additionally, warm night conditions are likely to prevail over isolated areas of East Uttar Pradesh on May 25 and Vidarbha till May 26.
On the progress of Southwest Monsoon, the IMD said, “Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Kerala and Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Northeast and adjoining East India during the next 4-5 days.
