Delhi Satya Niketan building collapse: One person has been declared dead while rescue teams have so far pulled out four people from the debris and shifted them to AIIMS trauma center where they are said to be in critical condition. The event to open the BJP office in Goa was curtailed after Union Home Minister Amit Shah left the venue on learning about the tragic incident in the state capital.

A local said the hostel was usually fully booked. Narrow and “congested lanes” also delayed emergency vehicles from reaching the spot, the person added, according to PTI.

Students who were in their rooms were trapped under the rubble, sharing another eyewitness account of the horror. He added that the building that collapsed was a five-storey boys’ hostel for paying guests called “Hostel Daze”, noting that another building next door also collapsed.

“The hostel was always full. So many people could still be trapped under the debris. The lanes are very congested, so it was difficult for the rescue vehicle to reach the spot faster,” said a local.

Several students sustained serious injuries, an eyewitness said.

“The building that collapsed is called ‘Daze Hostel’. There is another building that collapsed right next to it. ‘Daze Hostel’ is a dedicated boys PG; it was a five-storey building. The adjacent building also collapsed… All the students who were in their rooms were trapped under the debris,” an eyewitness told ANI.

“We will know the exact number of trapped students only by checking the registration records. Fire and rescue teams have been on the job for about 15 to 20 minutes – since the collapse – doing their best to pull people out. Many students have suffered serious injuries. Rescuers are pulling them out with great difficulty,” he said.

Witnesses at the scene estimated that more than 15 people may have been trapped under the rubble, although this number has not been officially confirmed.

Residents and eyewitnesses said they immediately joined the rescue operation, clearing the rubble with their hands and all available tools to search for people trapped underneath.

Another eyewitness said the situation could have been worse if the collapse had occurred on a weekday, as many students living nearby had returned home. “There were very few people,” he said.

8 firefighting units deployed on site

Construction work was going on in the basement when the building collapsed near Satya Niketan in south-west Delhi around 1.30 pm, according to PTI citing police sources.

Police said a PCR call about a collapse near Nanakpura Gurdwara was received at the South Campus police station at 1.34 pm. Officials said eight fire tenders along with several rescue teams from various departments were immediately rushed to the spot.

The incident took place in an area near Delhi University’s South Campus, which is lined with several buildings that primarily function as accommodation for paying students, hostels and restaurants.

Police officers, firefighters, CAT Ambulance teams and other emergency services were deployed at the scene. An NDRF team has also arrived, while rescue and rescue operations are on, the officer said.

BJP MLA Anil Sharma and Mayor Pravesh Wahi reached the site of the building collapse

Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi arrived at the site of the building collapse at Satya Niketan.

“I received information about the incident an hour ago. By that time the ambulance had already arrived. We want the children to be saved. There are many flaws in the system and I accept that. But right now I am asking everyone to proceed with the rescue operation first,” said Wahi.

BJP MLA Anil Sharma also reached the spot and said that people are still trapped.

“We are even getting calls from those who are trapped inside. The teams are in constant contact with those who are trapped inside; we are praying to God that all the people are safe,” he said.
