On 1 September, Chief Minister Vijay made an unscheduled stop at a roadside farm after an official inspection of the Mettur Hydroelectric Power Plant in Salem District, Tamil Nadu, after the opening of the Stanley Dam sluice gates in Mettur to facilitate agricultural activities.
When the TVK boss spotted a group of elderly women working in the nearby fields on their way to the Salem airport, he got out of his vehicle to directly greet them.

As the former superstar’s convoy arrived, a crowd began to gather around and Chellam, an elderly resident from a nearby village, came to see what the commotion was about. When she caught sight of the Chief Minister, she stepped forward without hesitation and took his hand.
“He asked me if I had eaten,” Chellam recalled, her voice beaming with joy. “I told him no because I was waiting to see him first,” she said, according to PTI.

Despite Chellam’s initial reluctance, Vijay can be seen in now-viral videos gently persuading an old woman before fitting her with Christian Dior sunglasses himself – a cinematic gesture from the former silver screen hero who quit acting and turned to full-time politics to serve the people.

“He looked the same as he did in his films,” said Chellam, adding, “I was so happy that I told him I would defend him if anyone tried to hurt him.”
The French luxury brand’s sunglasses are said to be worth it ₹40,000. The Mint could not verify the actual cost.
