A woman drowns the twins and tries to kill them

Thalaghattapur police have registered a case of murder against a 40-year-old woman for allegedly drowning her four-month-old twins before attempting suicide at her residence in south Bengaluru’s Vajarahalli on Tuesday.

Umadevi, Ramalingappa’s wife, was reportedly found trying to hang herself in a room in the house. Her twins were found dead in the same room.

According to the complaint by Ramalingappa (50), the family lived at BCCHS Layout in Vajarahalli for about 10 years. The couple underwent IVF treatment after which Umadevi gave birth to twins at Cloudnine Hospital on 5 May 2026.

The complaint said that about one-and-a-half months after giving birth, Umadevi started showing disinterest in taking care of the children and repeatedly said that they should be sent to the ashram.

The family subsequently took her to NIMHANS for psychiatric treatment. Doctors are said to have informed the family that her behavior may be related to postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance.

On Tuesday afternoon, when Ramalingappa returned home, he found the room locked from inside. After forcing it open, he allegedly found Umadevi trying to hang herself with her veil.

She was rescued and taken for treatment.

The twins were found dead in the same room. Doctors who examined the children reportedly suspect that they died as a result of drowning.

Based on the complaint, the Talaghattapur police registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Umadevi. The police suspect that she drowned the children before attempting suicide.
