Onions arrive from Nashik to cut prices

In an effort to bring down the price of onion in the open market, it needs to be sold through fair price shops in the state. The state government procured onions using the price stabilization fund as directed by the chief secretary in a review meeting.

Grade A onions were procured by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) as per Government of India guidelines.

A freight train carrying 850 tonnes of onions from Nashik arrived at the Korukkupet railway depot on Monday. Onions will be sent to 21 districts in the state. Chennai and Tiruchi will get 75 tonnes each and Coimbatore 100 tonnes. NAFED sources said that more loads are expected soon by rail and they are also being transported by road.

The Registrar of Co-operative Societies has directed the Tamil Nadu Consumer Co-operative Federation to ensure that consumers get onions on time through fair price shops. Onions are likely to sell at ₹35 per kg.

Meanwhile, the state government is also monitoring sugar prices, sources said.
