Milk price hike: Households in Mumbai, Tamil Nadu to face higher bills as prices rise ahead of holidays | Today’s news
The Bombay Milk Producers Association has announced that the wholesale prices of milk in Mumbai will increase from Tuesday. ₹ 9 per liter, making the price of 1 liter of milk in the city from ₹ 93 to ₹ 102.
This price will remain valid until February 28, 2027.
The increase in milk prices was attributed to rising costs of feed, oilseed meal and grain husks, in addition to rising costs associated with the transport and maintenance of livestock.
The price hike comes ahead of the festive season and may increase the prices of dairy products like sweets, paneer, curd etc.
Prices may also increase at local bakeries and restaurants that serve dairy products.
With this price increase, the retail price of milk delivered from the farm may shoot up to around ₹ 110 per liter for consumers, the Indian Express reported.
In early August, Gokul, which is the largest cooperative dairy union in Maharashtra, increased the retail price of buffalo milk by ₹ 2 per liter. This raised the price to ₹ 78 per liter in Mumbai, the same as in Pune, IE said.
This increase was also due to rising procurement prices. This price hike is one of the steepest one-time price adjustments by associations in recent history, ANI reported.
Mumbai is not the only place where the increase in the price of milk has been felt.
Milk prices to rise in Tamil Nadu, CM Vijay announces
The price of milk is also on the rise in Tamil Nadu, with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announcing that the purchase price of milk in the city has been increased to ₹44 per litre, which means a cumulative increase of ₹6 across the state.
The notification was made to the CM under Article 110 of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Rules following rising entry charges as pointed out by stakeholders, ANI reported.
The notification also stated that the Government of Tamil Nadu would incur an additional expenditure of Rs ₹30 million per month and ₹360 million per year.
More than 3.16 lakh milk producers in the state are expected to benefit from this increase in purchase price of milk. Apart from increasing the cost of buying milk, the Vijaya government has also announced that it will increase incentives for milk producers ₹3 to ₹5 per liter.
