The IPL will review the Impact Player rule after getting feedback from the franchises

The Impact Player rule is back under scrutiny as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeks fresh feedback from all 10 IPL franchises ahead of next season. The move comes months after BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board would review the controversial rule after the 2026 IPL.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the franchises have been asked to submit their views by Monday, August 31, as part of a wider feedback exercise on cricket operations. The BCCI is also looking for information on PMOA, umpires, practice sessions and playing conditions, but the most important issue remains the Impact Player rule.

This rule has been the main topic of recent IPL seasonsespecially after the 2026 edition saw a significant increase in the 200-plus total and renewed the bat-ball balance debate.

“As discussed at the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback from all franchises on key issues of cricket operations would be collected at the end of the tournament,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The board had previously indicated that the Impact Player rule was expected to continue for another season, despite opposition from several captains at a previous meeting.

BCCI LOOKING FOR A FRESH LOOK

The BCCI’s latest request is a formal follow-up to Saikia’s comments earlier this year, when he said the board would be more inclined to reconsider the rule if franchises raised concerns.

The Impact Player rule also attracted criticism from leading Indian cricketers, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who questioned its effect on the role of bowlers and the balance of T20 cricket.

However, Saikia defended the rule in May, pointing to the diversity of results throughout the tournament.

“Some low-scoring matches are also there. All the fans are enjoying the matches. The bowlers are also getting good wickets,” he said.

“It’s all happening, it’s a full bouquet in one package.”

The latest feedback process could now give the BCCI a clearer picture of how franchises view the rule after another full season of its use.

The board has asked the teams to discuss the said issues with the respective cricket operations departments and submit a consolidated feedback by August 31. This will allow BCCI to compile answers and decide if any changes are necessary ahead of IPL 2027.

For now, the Impact Player rule remains in place, but the response of the franchises could decide whether it continues unchanged in the next edition of the IPL.
