Ex-MP demands reduction in NEET-PG All India quota to 15%

Former MP and BRS leader B. Vinod Kumar urged Union Health and Welfare Minister JP Nadda to reduce the All India Quota (AIQ) for postgraduate medical admissions from the existing 50% to 15%, bringing it at par with the quota applicable to undergraduate medical seats.

In a letter to Mr. Nadda, he said the substantial difference between 15% AIQ for eligible government MBBS posts and 50% AIQ for post-graduation posts required reconsideration.

He said the issue is particularly important for Telangana, which has invested significantly in medical education by establishing new government medical colleges substantially expanding both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

These institutions, he said, were set up with substantial public expenditure to meet Telangana’s growing healthcare demands.

Mr. Vinod Kumar said that medical graduates from Telangana can legitimately expect that a substantial number of these PG posts will remain available to candidates from the state, subject to merit and constitutional provisions.

He clarified that his demand was not against the principle of AIQ or national merit. However, he argued that the existing 50% AIQ at the graduate level appears to be disproportionately high compared to the 15% quota at the undergraduate level.

“Postgraduate medical seats are highly specialized and their number is limited,” he said, adding that state medical colleges and PG chairs should be able to retain a larger share to strengthen their specialized healthcare system.

Requesting the Center to reduce the NEET-PG AIQ to 15%, he said this would continue to provide opportunities for intra-national mobility while allowing states to retain a larger share of PG seats.

Mr. Vinod Kumar also sought a state-wide analysis of the AIQ system and such transparent data would provide an objective basis to determine whether the existing 50% formula is fair to all states.

He emphasized that the demand should not be seen as seeking preferential treatment for Telangana but as an attempt to develop a more balanced federal approach.
