‘Peptide Party’ in Bengaluru canceled after FSDA seeks regulatory details

The ‘Peptide Party’ scheduled to be held at Koramangala in Bengaluru on Saturday was canceled by the organizers following an inquiry by the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) seeking details of peptide products proposed to be promoted or made available at the event.

In a public advisory issued Friday, FSDA said authorized representatives of organizers Upsurge Labs LLP submitted a written statement informing the department that the event had been canceled. Organizers have also sought time to submit documents related to the event and the ministry said they have been given an opportunity to submit the required documents.

Notice issued

The development followed a notification issued by FSDA on Thursday after it took note of the publicity of the proposed action on social media. The ministry said the identity, composition, source, intended use and regulatory status of the preparations were not specified in the promotional material. The FSDA sought details of each peptide product, import and other regulatory licences.

Organizers were specifically asked to clarify whether the products qualified as “drugs” under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. If they did not, the ministry sought a legal basis for such a classification.

The notice also requested information on claims related to weight management, muscle growth and more, along with scientific evidence and regulatory approvals supporting such claims. Where a submission was proposed, details of medical supervision, consent procedures and measures to address adverse events were requested.

The notification also covered products that could be presented as food, health supplements or nutraceuticals. In such cases, the FSDA has sought the relevant FSSAI license and other details.

No final finding

However, the department clarified in its notice that the information it has is not considered conclusive evidence of any violation. He said the promotional material raised questions that needed to be investigated, including whether any proposed human use had the required regulatory and ethical clearance.

The organizers were invited to provide information and documents by 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The notice states that failure to provide the required documents could result in a suspension of the proposed event and could lead to further regulatory action.

An FSDA advisory on Friday said organizers have since announced the cancellation of the event.

Health Minister UT Khader told The Hindu that the cancellation comes amid considerable discussion and criticism on social media over the proposed event.

Questions regarding the safety and regulatory status of peptide products and proposed activities were raised at the meeting. However, the FSDA’s activity focused on determining the regulatory status of the products and the nature of their proposed use rather than making a final determination of the legality of the action or the products.

What are peptides?

Peptides are not the only drug or substance. This is a class of short chains of amino acids that have a number of functions in the body.

Some, including established drugs such as insulin and some other peptide-based drugs, have well-established medical uses. However, a number of peptides touted online for weight loss, muscle recovery, longevity or other wellness purposes are still being researched, and some are being marketed without the regulatory approval required for drugs.
